OOC: Memory #2 (Sight/Sound)
[[OOC: This memory is from Episode 3, "Hedge Fund Homeboys". Derrick's punishment is to be stuck in a grownup-sized version of THIS for 5 days. BERNARD WILL WUB HER BEST FWEND EVEN MORE
I decided to not blur out the names of Promise's friends since, as I recall, she never mentions them again, but if this is a problem, I can adjust it.]]
The world was dark- until Derrick became aware of sunlight in his eyes. Opening them just a bit, he raised his hand to block it out as best he could.
"Hey," he said groggily to a shape he couldn't quite make out. "'f you're looking for lunch money, my wallet's on the nightstand." He adjusted himself to be more comfortable in his chair.
"I lied to you, Daddy."
Promise.
"Mmm, can't this wait?" Derrick grumped.
"No," said Promise, sounding like she was extremely upset. "You need to know." Derrick finally seemed to register that this was important, because he fully opened his eyes and turned to face the redhaired girl, closing and setting aside a laptop that had been resting in his lap. The room was filled with early-morning sunlight, and had a desk along with shelves of books, the titles and authors of which were blurred.
"Oh. Yeah," he said, giving her his attention. Her eyes were red and watery. "Yeah. O-okay."
"Remember the holiday formal? How Kelsey and I went to Taylor's house after? Well, when we left it was already rainy and we tried for, like, half an hour to get a taxi but we couldn't. We were already so soaking wet and cold that we finally decided to take the subway, even though it was way after ten."
"Well, considering that getting a cab in the rain is kinda like winning the Powerball jackpot, I forgive you," said Derrick.
"No! Listen," said Promise, frustrated, standing and crossing her arms, then burst out rapidly, "The two was coming and Kelsey went to the door and was going down the stairs to hold the door for me but when I swiped my card it was empty and I didn't have any time to add any more money to it and Kelsey was screaming for me to come and I was- I was just so tired and I was just anxious to get home and Dad, I- I don't even wanna say it."
"... What?"
"I jumped the turnstile," she practically sobbed. Derrick stared at her for a moment and then asked,
"Did you make the train?"
"Y-yeah. B-but the point is, I didn't tell you, even after you were so sweet and concerned yesterday. I'm sorry."
"You actually jumped the turnstile?"
"But I swiped my card twice the next day and didn't even ride," Promise said earnestly as she got down on her knees next to his chair.
"Whoakay," said Derrick, letting out a breath. "Whoa. Sweetie, if that- if that's the worst thing you've done, I'm a happy, happy man."
"But... I lied to you... shouldn't you punish me?" Promise asked uncertainly.
"Yes. No, you're right. Uhm..." Derrick considered. "Mandatory ice cream for breakfast. No excuses."
"I'm serious. If you won't, I will."
"I'm serious about the ice cream," Derrick told her.
"Fine! I'm grounded for a week," said Promise.
"Alright," Derrick agreed. "I'm tough but fair."
"After the DC trip," she added.
"That's my girl," said Derrick proudly. Promise leaned into him, and Derrick put his arm around her, hugging her close.
"Thanks, Dad," she whispered, and the memory faded.
