Chapter 14. Fathers, be good to your daughters

Promise was my daughter.

She was here for months. My daughter was here, I spoke to her and had no idea who she was. No idea.

Now she's gone.

[There's a long pause.]

I really, really don't know how to feel about that.

Yeah. Yeah, it is.

[Whoops, the phrasing he was thinking of, about how it's wrong that these moments pass you by, pinged him. On a second look - no, no, he won't say it. He barely knows Derrick, after all.]

I can't say she was more than a friendly acquaintance, but she did seem like a fine young lady. Very bright.

Do you think you'll be okay? You have friends who - well, even if they can't really understand, they'll try to help.

[If they're real friends, anyway. Not that he'll say that, either.]

Yeah, I do. Fred's over. Got my brother. And everyone else is being awesome to a total stranger.

That's good.

I guess we're all imagining this happening to us, too. It's not impossible that a lot of us are connected somehow, and just don't know it.

And even if we're not, well- losing is something we can all empathise with, I guess. It's a common emotion.
